Martin passed away peacefully at the Quinte Health Care North Hastings Hospital, Bancroft, on Thursday March 11th 2021 at the age of 92 after a brief bout with pneumonia. Survived by his loving wife Irmgard, his children Andre, Edna (Brandy), Mona (Tim Boyle). Loving grandfather to Kaitlyn (Dominic Poster) and Shannon (Eric Busto). Martin immigrated to Canada in spring 1953 and discovered Bancroft in 1956, where he settled shortly after making it his new home. In 1958 on a visit back to Germany, he met his future wife Irmgard and she joined him in May 1959. He was a stone mason, general contractor and successful local businessman with ingenious work ideas. Martin contributed to the restoration and preservation of many of Bancroft’s historic or iconic buildings including the Woolen Mill, NHHS, Municipal Buildings and Railway Station; caring deeply for his community. Over the years he served the towns of Apsley and Bancroft as a councillor and Dungannon Twp as councillor and Reeve; always with the intent of making a difference. Martin had a love of aviation, was a recreational pilot and a long-term member of the Bancroft Flying Club. Later in life Martin and Irmgard traveled extensively and also enjoyed many winters in Costa Rica. In keeping with Martin’s wishes, he will be cremated. No service is planned at this time. A special thank you to the caring staff and Doctors at the North Hastings Hospital who were so kind and attentive during Martin's final days. I greatly appreciate all of the donations made on Martin's behalf! It would have meant a lot to him to know that the L'Amable Bible Chapel and the North Hastings Hospital are being so well supported! I am grateful to know that so many people care so deeply about Martin and myself! It has been wonderful to have my family around me this past week, looking after my wellbeing and handling all of the many details pertaining to Martin's passing.
