It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of SUSAN MARIAN ATKINSON on May 23rd 2022. We sincerely thank all of the incredible doctors and nurses who cared for her and supported our family during her lengthy stay in critical care at Solder’s Memorial Hospital in Orillia. We would also like to thank her amazing medical team at University Hospital in London for all of their incredible work during her liver transplant in 2018. Susan was predeceased by loving parents Dr. Reginald and Marian Atkinson of Waterloo and her brother Douglas. Cherished mother of Rebecca (Kris) of Welland and Geoff of Kitchener. Grandmother of Zachary, Ryan, and Jenna (all of Welland). Survived by siblings Donald (Christine), and Peter (Janet), and aunt to many nieces and nephews across Canada and in Australia. Susan was a graduate of W.C.I. Secondary, held a diploma in Early Childhood Education from Conestoga College, and a degree in Recreation & Leisure Studies from the University of Waterloo. She dedicated her life to the well-being and care of children through career positions and volunteer work. She owned and operated Cricket Corner Preschool, served as Director of Children’s Services at the Stratford-Perth YMCA, and the Hamilton-Burlington YMCA. She was involved in Girl Scouts as a leader and camp quartermaster, and served on various committees dedicated to child welfare. Susan was passionate about music, photography and the outdoors. She was an accomplished piano player and enjoyed teaching this instrument to others. She also enjoyed playing the clarinet, guitar, and was learning to play the harp. Outdoor pursuits included gardening, camping, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, swimming, and sitting by the campfire enjoying the sounds of nature. Susan will be remembered as a determined woman with a kind heart, who placed the care of her family above all else. Cremation has taken place, and per her request, a Memorial Service will be held at Parkminster United Church in Waterloo on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to London Health Sciences - Transplant Program, or to your local YMCA - in support of children’s programs, would be appreciated in memory of Susan’s life journey.
