Opas, Eric Samuel |
December 24, 1933 - November 14, 2021 We are heartbroken to tell the world we lost this amazing soul, on Sunday, November 14th 2021, after hours of listening to his favorite people trading their memories of times spent together. His laugh, his smile, those blue eyes, and his mannerism was the very definition of “one of the good ones”! Eric was extremely proud of his Finnish roots and showed us what strong work ethic looked like. He laughed in the face of cold weather, often known for shovelling in his house coat on his way to grab the paper. He was always busy, rarely rested and had the best lawn on Walker’s Lake. After retiring from Ontario Hydro, Grandpa and Nan started snow birding in Arizona – coming back with the hippest treasures around for the granddaughters, including our VHS Achy Breaky Heart Line Dancing Instructional Video. Our Gramps spoiled us with a lifetime of memories, hours of comic relief and in our adulthood became our best friend and biggest cheerleader. We will miss the talks of the famous Benny King, Nora the horse, and stories of Rossport. He was always a jokester and we believed far too late into life that Grandpa whistling opened the garage door, or that touching the rear-view mirror in a vehicle honked the horn. He leaves behind his devoted daughter Debra and son-in-law Morgan, granddaughters Kylee McGrath (Ryan Vogt) and Sally McGrath, along with three great-grandchildren (Gibson and Ripley Vogt and Addie Houston) who were lucky enough to experience sharing treats and laughs with their amazing Papa. Predeceased by his son Gary (1980), and his wife of 65 years Shirley (Nov 2020) and who we are sure was very impatiently waiting for him to join her – so they could discuss the 8-0 win for Team Canada over Finland the day before. There won’t ever be enough words to sum up the impact that he left on all those that loved him and those who were lucky enough to meet him in his lifetime. In his memory, we encourage you to use extra Becel, have a root beer, and indulge in chocolate covered cherries. Cremation has taken place, and Eric and Shirley’s ashes will be interred in Terrace Bay, at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, be kind and considerate to family, friends and to one another.
