Brethour, Charlotte Sharpe

It's with heavy hearts that the family of Charlotte Sharpe Brethour announce her passing on April 24, 2020 at the North Hastings Centennial Manor at the age of 94.  Mum was born on Feb. 8, 1926 in Glasgow, Scotland to John and Margaret Smith.  She is pre-deceased by her husband Floyd, and son Fred, her parents, and brothers John and Alex, and sister, best-friend and travelling companion, Margaret.   Left to keep her memory are her children Shiela Schruder (Terry) of Maynooth, Louise Watson (Glen) of Ennismore, Charlene Rogers of Lake St Peter, Colin Brethour (Judy) of Norwood, and Glen Brethour (Mary) of L'amable.  Missing their 'Gram', are her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Anna.  Family was always of the utmost importance to Mum.  Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, Mum was determined to emigrate to Canada for a better life.  After working, scrimping and saving, she made passage for Canada when she was in her early 20's.  While living and working in Toronto she met the man she would marry and build a life with.  They lived in Niagara Falls and Toronto before moving to Lake St Peter.  This must've been quite the experience for the girl from Glasgow living in near isolation during the winter, with a young family and a husband working in the city.  But anyone that knew Mum, knew that she was determined and hard-working, and just a wee bit stubborn.  Mum and Dad lived in Lake St. Peter for 40 some years, before moving to Lakefield.  Mum moved back to Bancroft after Dad passed away.  She will be missed, but always in our thoughts.  The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Centennial Manor for the kindness and caring that they showed Mum and our family during her time there, especially during these last few weeks.  Cremation has taken place, with interment at St. Paul’s United Church Cemetery, Lake St. Peter.  As expressions of sympathy, donations to Hastings Centennial Manor would be appreciated by the family.  (Cards available at the funeral home (613) 338-3259 or e-mail condolences to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or visit www.mgdalyfuneralhome.com).
