Dad was born in Belleville, Ontario, the only child of Florence and Norman Herring.
When Dad was about 7 years old his parents purchased land on Papineau Lake. Over the next 57 years a small cottage with boathouse, and a larger home were built . The cottage property became the family hobby and passion. Weekends and holidays were spent working hard as a family on the lake property, with some time set aside for enjoying the water and beautiful surroundings. As a teenager, Dad was also an avid water skier. Eventually Florence, Norman, and Richard would all spend retirement years at the lake.
Dad spent his working years at Olivetti in pump sales, as well as owning and operating many small businesses. In his later years he enjoyed winters in Costa Rica, and summers at Papineau.
Surviving him are his children: Stephanie (Bill) Toombs (Calgary, Ab.), Robert Herring (Canmore, Ab.), Kathryn Herring (Hinton, Ab.); his step-daughters: Jane Byers, Nancy Vey, and Barbara Buyers. He also leaves one grandson, Charley Herring (Hinton, Ab.).

Cremation has taken place. A graveside interment service will take place at Combermere Anglican Cemetery in Combermere, ON, on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
