Canning, John Samuel

John died unexpectedly at his home on Papineau Lake on February 13th at the age of 76.  John grew up in Brantford where he practiced law, played an active role in politics and was an avid supporter of classical music.  Over the years he was involved with a number of community organizations including Kiwanis, the Brantford Symphony Orchestra, the Brant Youth Symphony, and the Glenhyrst Arts Council.  In 1978, John met and married Margaret who introduced him to Papineau Lake and the beauty of the area.  For the next 40 years he was a part of both communities.  John proudly encouraged his daughters Jennifer and Julia in their academic pursuits and passions, learning and growing along with them.  Five years ago, John and Margaret retired to Papineau where they immersed themselves in the life and work of the Maynooth-Madawaska Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada.  John's love of storytelling, teaching and his natural affinity for public speaking will be fondly remembered.   John is survived by his beloved wife Margaret (Schmieder) Canning, their two children The Rev. Jennifer Canning of Brantford, and Julia Canning of Ottawa, his sister-in-law Mary Schmieder, brother-in-law John Schmieder (LeeAnn), nephew Anthony Schmieder, and cousin Claire Sumler.  Cremation has taken place.  There will be two ceremonies to celebrate John's life: St. Andrew's-Bethel United Church (Hwy 62, Maynooth) on Wednesday, February 20 at 2pm with visitation from 12pm-2 pm; and St. Andrew's United Church (95 Darling St., Brantford) on Saturday, February 23 at 1pm with visitation and reception from 2pm-4pm.   Memorial donations can be made to the Maynooth-Madwaska Pastoral Charge, the Brantford Symphony Orchestra, Brantford Music Club, Amnesty International or a charity of your choice.  Arrangements entrusted to M.G. Daly Funeral Home, Maynooth.  (Cards available at the funeral home (613) 338-3259 or e-mail condolences to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or visit www.mgdalyfuneralhome.com).
