James, Helen Elizabeth

Helen Elizabeth James—September 11, 1924—January 23, 2018

Helen James passed away peacefully at Caressant Care in Marmora while her niece Cheryl Borys from Alberta was visiting.  Helen was a woman, ‘ahead of her time’ and ‘forward thinking’.  She was born in Prince Albert Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm with her two sisters and two brothers.  Helen taught school for many years in both Saskatchewan and Ontario.  Her passion as a peace activist was further inspired by attending the 1963 Peace March lead by Dr. Martin Luther King.  Helen lived her life as an advocate for World Peace and Animal Rights, and became a vegan over 50 years ago.  She and her husband Tom owned a Health Food Store in St. Catharines for 10 years before moving to Bancroft and Cardiff in 1963—where she taught English and History.  Helen made friends everywhere she went and she passed on her knowledge of eating vegan and the health benefits of it.  She loved poetry and often was found in her sunroom reading poetry with friends and most often she recited her many poems by heart.  She was also an active member of the Green Party.  Helen will be missed by many as she had a way of making each person in her life ‘feel special’.  Helen is survived by fourteen nieces and nephews and four sister-in-laws.  Cremation has taken place.  She will now be with her beloved partner and husband Tom. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Home Again would be appreciated by the family.  Arrangements entrusted to M.G. Daly Funeral Home, Maynooth.  (Cards available at the funeral home (613) 338-3259 or e-mail condolences to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or visit www.mgdalyfuneralhome.com).
